Mobile revenue growth offsets fixed line declines at CWC

UK-based Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has released its interim financial statement for the six-month period ended 30 September 2012, with the company reporting flat turnover and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). In the period under review, CWC posted a consolidated turnover of USD1.431 billion, down 1% year-on-year, with a 9% increase in mobile revenues compared to the year-ago period – boosted by a growth in mobile data services – offsetting most of the decline in fixed line turnover. Group EBITDA for the six-month period stood at USD445 million, following what CWC called ‘an improved performance in the Caribbean and continued strength in Macau’

Gamtel’s fixed network revenues grow 4%; Gamcel sales jump 48%

Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel) has reported a 4% year-on-year increase in fixed network revenues to GMD1. 450 billion (USD48 million) in full-year 2011, compared to GMD1.395 billion earned in 2010. Managing director Baboucarr Sanyang, presenting the fixed line telco’s annual activity report and financial statement to the National Assembly, announced that the growth in total turnover was attributed to yearly increases in international, interconnection and data revenue of GMD13 million, GMD32 million and GMD42 million, respectively.

FT-Orange sees 2012 sales at EUR44 billion

France Telecom-Orange (FT-Orange) chief executive Stephane Richard is predicting that group revenues will reach EUR44 billion (USD56 billion) in 2012, down from EUR45.3 billion last year. Analysts polled by Bloomberg had been forecasting 2012 sales of EUR43.4 billion. Richard says that revenue growth is likely to come from FT’s operations in the Middle East and Africa, helping to counteract an expected fall in sales in the domestic market and at some other European operations.

Proposed law would undermine independence

The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) has expressed its concern regarding Serbia’s draft Law on Fees for the Use of Public Goods, reports news portal b92. The proposed law would see certain fees channelled into the state budget before being redistributed to agencies and ministries. SEEMO argues that the provisions would eliminate the independence of regulators: by concentrating fees in the state budget, the government would be able to exert influence on regulators such as the Republic Agency for Electronic Communications (RATEL) through the allocation of funds
