Pan-Central American WiMAX operator IBW Group, which currently counts operations in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica, has reportedly entered into negotiations with an unspecified number of mobile network operators in the region regarding its potential launch as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Whilst little has been reported about IBW’s wireless aspirations to date, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in February 2011 US-based equipment vendor Alepo announced a partnership with IBW to provide it with a Long Term Evolution-ready (LTE-ready) Online Charging System (OCS) in preparation for its continued rollout of WiMAX networks across Central America. The move will enable IBW to make the transition to LTE in the future, although the company has yet to confirm any specific plans of that nature.
