South Korea’s three mobile network operators reportedly increased investment by 20% in 2011 compared to the previous year, the Korea Herald reports, citing data produced by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). SK Telecom, KT Corp and LG Uplus spent a combined total of KRW7.67 trillion (USD6.86 billion) on improvements to their respective infrastructures in the twelve months to end-December 2011, with the regulator noting that the increased expenditure had mainly been directed towards ensuring each could cope with growing demand for wireless services, while also preparing for the introduction of Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The KCC also noted that marketing spending had fallen in 2011, reporting an overall 8.1% year-on-year drop in advertising costs, although it did add that the ratio of marketing cost versus revenues was still above its advisory level of 20%.
